Unido, y realizaron una revisión sistemática para examinar la prevalencia de la
hipertensión en la población pediátrica general. Cuarenta y siete artículos
fueron incluidos en el metanálisis; los estudios incluidos tuvieron mediciones
de la presión arterial de al menos tres ocasiones separadas. Los investigadores
encontraron que en niños de 19 años o menos, la prevalencia combinada estimada
fue del 4 % para la hipertensión, 9.67 % para la prehipertensión, 4 % para la
hipertensión en etapa 1 y 0.95 % para la hipertensión en etapa 2. La
prevalencia de hipertensión infantil fue mayor cuando se midió con un
esfigmomanómetro aneroide que con un esfigmomanómetro de mercurio y un
esfigmomanómetro oscilométrico (7,23 % frente a 4,59 y 2,94 %, respectivamente)
y entre niños con sobrepeso y obesidad versus niños con peso normal (15,27 y
4,99 %, respectivamente, frente a 1,90 %). En las últimas dos décadas hubo una
tendencia al aumento de la prevalencia de hipertensión infantil; entre 2000 y
2015, hubo una tasa de aumento relativa de 75 a 79 %. La prevalencia de hipertensión
varió de 4.32 % entre los niños de 6 años a 3.28 % entre los de 19 años en
2015. Este estudio publicado en la revista en JAMA Pediatrics sugiere
que la hipertensión infantil representa un desafío de salud pública
considerable en todo el mundo.
